Dirt Cheap is a demolition contractor working in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina. The town formed in 1992, when Batesburg and Leesville joined into one. It sits in western Lexington County, and a small part of it reaches into Saluda County. U.S. Route 1 runs through town and splits the north side from the south side. The town hosts the South Carolina Poultry Festival on the second Saturday in May, as it has since 1987. The Census Bureau's five-year estimates put the town at 4,935 people and 2,542 homes. About half of those homes were built before 1970, and about one home in twenty is a mobile home. Houses that old wear out, and a fire or a failed roof can finish one off. Once repairs cost more than the house is worth, it comes down. The lot then needs clearing and grading before anything new goes up.
Dirt Cheap is family and woman owned. Our shop sits on Edmund Highway in West Columbia, about 22 miles east of town in a straight line. We work in and around Batesburg-Leesville regularly. The company runs full size CASE excavators and dozers, plus a tri axle Kenworth dump truck with trailers. Those machines are sized to take a building apart and load it out. The same equipment handles land clearing and grading once a building is down. We handle house demolition down to bare ground, and small commercial buildings come down the same way. The slab, the concrete steps and the block piers come out with the house. Debris leaves on our own trucks and goes to the landfill as part of the job. Estimates are free, so call (803) 796-4727 and tell us what needs to come down.

Age drives most of it. By the Census Bureau's estimates, 382 homes in town were built in 1939 or earlier. Another 85 went up in the 1940s, 425 in the 1950s and 377 in the 1960s. The median home in Batesburg-Leesville was built in 1970. A house that old can sit empty for years before a new owner decides it has to go. Others come down after a fire leaves the frame unsafe. Older store buildings and churches reach the same point, and the same machines take them down. The town's National Register of Historic Places listings include three historic districts. They are Batesburg Commercial, Church Street and Leesville College. If a building sits in one of them, check with the Town before you plan its demolition.
A demolition job in Batesburg-Leesville starts with the utilities shut off and the permit in hand. A full size excavator then takes the structure down from the top and loads the debris into our trucks. Old footings and foundation walls get broken out with the same excavator. Lexington County requires contractor waste to go to the landfill, never to its collection centers. The landfill charges by the ton, and its current schedule lists $38 a ton for mixed demolition debris. Clean concrete goes for $20 a ton, and loads that were never sorted run $56 a ton. So the way a building comes apart shows up in the disposal bill. Once the building is gone, we backfill the holes and leave the lot level for whatever comes next.
The town is built along the Atlantic Seaboard Fall Line, where the Piedmont meets the coastal plain. U.S. Route 1 follows that line through town. North of it, the ground is mostly clay. South of it, sandy soil takes over. In Batesburg-Leesville, that split shows up as soon as a building is gone. Clay holds water and turns soft after a hard rain. Sandy soil drains fast but can wash on a bare slope. So a clay lot on the north side gets graded differently than a lot on the south side. Our finish grading after a teardown sets the fall of the lot. Water then runs off the pad and away from the next foundation. Where the old slab sat, we bring in fill and pack it before the final grade.
Building new on a cleared lot in Batesburg-Leesville follows the Town's own steps. Once the Town approves the site plans, they go to Lexington County Public Works for storm water review. The plans come back with a Land Disturbance Permit issued by Lexington County. The Town's building permit comes after that. A lot grown up in trees and brush needs land clearing for a new home site before any grading starts. The county landfill takes clean yard debris at $29 a ton. Mixed with other debris, it runs $38 a ton. Our guide to what land clearing costs per acre in South Carolina covers the rest. Old concrete left on the lot comes out through concrete removal for driveways and slabs.
